The search for the perfect lip gloss is one of those things that I just accepted long ago as something that would be a lifelong pursuit. It's not a major life stressor, but rather one of those things where you're perpetually underwhelmed. On a whim during the last Sephora VIB Rouge event, I purchased a gift set called the Signature Lip Trio from YSL (sold out). The set featured two full sizes of the Glossy Stains in No. 43 Rouge Philtre and No. 7 Corail Aquatique, and a sample size of Rouge Pur Couture lipstick in shade No. 1 Le Rouge.
So here's the thing: I was expecting something pretty nice, as most YSL lip products have wonderful textures, but I have to admit that there was definitely some advance fear that the "glossy" part or the "stain" part was going to be not-so-great. I am not a fan of vinyl shiny lips, and a lot of lip stains stain your lips in a weird uneven way, giving you the dreaded dirty kid at camp who drank too much koolaid or has a Cheetos ring around the mouth look. Turns out, I had nothing to fear. These glosses are phenomenal.
I tried the Rouge Philtre shade, applying it around 10am. It went on smooth, and instead of being sticky or goopy it had more of a silky texture, with a water-based feel. My lips actually felt moisturized, and not at all like there was a layer of shiny wax on top, which can be typical for a lot of lipglosses. I have been struggling lately with really, really dry, chapped lips, and so was blown away by how smooth and hydrated my lips were...for the next 8 hours. 8 hours!!! Crazy town. I generally have to reapply lip balm every hour. This stuff is pure sorcery, and I want more.
I went to Sephora and swatched a bunch of the colors. My phone died, and I wasn't able to take a quick picture until 3 hours later. All of the colors were still there. Yep, still there. Amazingness.
You can see that the color stays even and semi-matte as it wears. These glosses are perfect for someone who doesn't like to reapply often and wants a great color payoff without a lot of fuss. These would also be great if you're going to an event like a wedding or party and won't have time to touch up your lips. Or, you know, also great for everyday life when you don't feel like worrying about what your lips are doing, because honestly, who has time for that?
My favorite shades are (from left to right): No 15 Rose Vinyl; No 14 Fuschia Dore; No 27 Peche Cerra-Cola; and No 11 Rouge Gouache. Apply one coat for a semi-matte look, a second coat for a nice smooth look, and a third layer if you want to amp up the gloss factor. Check out Fleur de Force's review of Fuschia Dore here.
They retail for $36 and are available at most major beauty counters. Have you tried them? What do you think?
